Why Is The Practice of Yoga Emotional?

Being a Yoga instructor, I have frequently witnessed students breaking down in tears during yoga sessions, often towards the conclusion of my classes. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as an emotional release.

Yoga is recognized not just as a physical activity, which is why it is often referred to as a transformative experience. Despite being commonly associated with relaxation and inner peace, what many are unaware of is that yoga can also be a profound voyage that impacts both the body and the emotions, sometimes leading to unexpected tears.

Emotions are experienced through the lens of the body, the lens of chemistry. When we feel sadness or grief, if not adequately expressed, it remains within us. It resides in our mind. It involves a chemical response, and each emotion triggers a reaction. These deeply rooted emotions are harbored in the hips, shoulders, back, and other areas of the body.

Yoga involves a process of uncovering and dealing with the emotions and toxins that we have been holding onto. By raising body temperature, increasing blood flow, and syncing movements with deep breathing, yoga allows the body and mind to train and release these elements effectively.

During yoga practice, particularly towards the end, we experience the sensation of prana moving freely throughout our body. The emergence of feelings or emotions is a positive indication that we are purifying our inner being. As we breathe and release energy, emotions surface, including intense ones like tears, fear, or anger. It is important to simply allow these patterns to dissolve like shedding layers and surrender to the process.

When the heart Chakra's energy flows freely, it has the power to release our repressed emotions.

Despite our choice to avoid feeling it, we internalize pain and carry it with us. This pain remains ingrained in our bodies. Emotions and misconceptions reside within us, hindering us from attaining Samadhi, which is described as "conscious enlightenment." Any discomfort or lack of ease in the body prevents us from achieving and encountering this state.

Asanas are one path to blissful contentment, working to bring us closer by focusing our minds and releasing any emotional or inner tension in our bodies.

Yoga is an excellent healing practice and a fantastic method to free oneself from stress and anxiety. Engaging in Yoga enables us to effectively release these emotions for the first time. If you find yourself crying during or after a yoga session, allow yourself to cry as much as necessary and embrace the experience of releasing your feelings and emotions.

Namaste.
