The Sahara
Together with my close friends, we planned a journey from Marrakesh to the Sahara desert and back. We embarked on our 4X4 vehicle, covering approximately 600 kilometers to reach the small Riad where we had made reservations for an overnight stay. The following day, accompanied by our local guide, we traversed the dry dunes and sandy trails of Merzuga for hours before reaching our initial refuge. Here, we restocked on supplies, fresh food, and water.
Following a much-needed break, we made our way to the dry salt lake of Iriqui, located near Merzuga village, where we discovered fossils, ancient inscriptions, and artwork on stones, which proved to be quite fascinating. The Sahara desert's landscape is primarily formed by wind erosion, occasional rainfall, and features dry valleys, lakes, and sand flats. I was particularly amazed by the presence of delicate vegetation like Acacias and sporadic palm trees.
Embarking on a journey to the desert in Morocco feels like reaching a distant and ultimate destination, as if venturing into a completely different realm. Witnessing the initial signs of sand left in the wake of our vehicle sparks a genuine thrill, with occasional off-road paths guiding us towards uncharted territories.
The camp was ready and waiting for us, in the Erg ‘sand sea’ of Chigaga, the largest dune in Morocco. Dunes surrounding us, where the greatest point for admiring the millions of stars, a sky I never saw that bright in my entire life. Magical beauty, hearing the Tuareg people playing songs around the fire, and drums is so enchanting. The encircled dunes were a great point for sunset and sunrise.
During our trip, we enjoyed a tasty Tajine, a traditional Moroccan dish, along with tea and hot beverages prepared by our guides. We spent the night in Berber sleeping tents, resting on small mattresses and cozy linen. To stay warm, we danced by the fire, as the night temperature could drop significantly, moving to the beat of the music. I experienced a profound sense of peace that filled my heart.
